PAX Device Troubleshooting: Ping Your Device to See if it is Reachable

If RepairQ is unable to communicate with your PAX device, you may need to update the IP address in your Payment Device settings. As a further measure, users can ping their payment device directly from their computer to confirm that the connection is successful.

Ping your PAX Device from a Mac

1. Open the Terminal Application. If you are unsure of how to find this app, try searching "terminal" in Spotlight search.

2. Once the app is running, type (without the quotations) "ping device.IP.address."  Note that "device.IP.address" is the IP address that is assigned to your payment device, e.g. "ping 192.168.1.15."

3. After you have typed in the command, press Enter. You will see a string of messages once the information is submitted.

4a. If you see messages that read __ bytes from __ with 0% packet loss, then you were able to reach the PAX device successfully.

4b. If you see messages that read Request timeout, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss, or similar, then you are unable to reach the PAX device, and either the IP address you entered was wrong, or you are not on the same local network as the device.

5. Press ctrl+c to stop the ping.

 

Ping your PAX Device on a Windows Device

1. Search and locate the Command Prompt application.

2. On the menu to the right of the search results, click Run as administrator. If prompted for permission to do so, click Yes.

Note: Alternatively, you can right-click the application and select Run as administrator.

 

3. Once the app is running, type (without the quotations) "ping device.IP.address."  Note that "device.IP.address" is the IP address that is assigned to your payment device, e.g. "ping 192.168.1.15."

4. After you have typed in the command, press Enter. You will see a string of messages once the information is submitted.

5a. If you see messages that read Packets: Sent = __, Received = __, Lost = 0 (0% loss), or similar, then you were able to reach the PAX device successfully.

5b. If you see messages that read Request timed out, Destination host unreachable, or show any packets lost, then you are unable to reach the PAX device, and either the IP address you entered was wrong, or you are not on the same local network as the device.

6. The ping should stop automatically, or you can Press ctrl+shift+6 to stop the ping.
